Woodturning Hate
I thought the title was a more striking title than "woodturning a twisted pseudo-doppler effect... and failed". As you can imagine from the title, I was not happy with the final piece!

Woodturning Mountain Dew from Epoxy Resin
Переглядів 2,1 тис.Рік тому
Do the Dew, woodturning a custom built Mountain Dew can for an epoxy resin nightlight. This took a while to complete, having to 3d print the logo components, generate a silicone mold and finally cast the resin. An intricate, time consuming build. But was it worth it? It was a difficult logo design and ultimately I didn't use enough dye so that the whole system was too transparent for my liking....
Woodturning Cherry Crotch Cross - The Rorschach Test Bowl
Переглядів 2,9 тис.Рік тому
Simple woodturning cherry crotch cross, in fact my first crotch woodturning. This ended up a beautiful bowl and an intriguing Rorschach test! Let me know what you see (in the comments below). Basically, it was a 'go slow' woodturning till enough material was removed to aid balance and then a lot of sanding needed. Definitely worth the patience required. 🔴 Please like, subscribe and comment THIN...
Woodturning a Torus - A World Saving Tribute
Переглядів 4,2 тис.Рік тому
In this video I'm woodturning a torus, going beyond every other mere woodturned toroidal structure. This next generation segmented woodturning torus actually lights up and saved the world! The lights are SK9822 LEDs and are run by an Arduino Elegoo Nano using the FastLED library. And yes, you can make segmented rings using epoxy resin segments. These are sanded roughly on the inner facing side ...
Laser cut slinky from wood

Using scrap wood is a better eco friendly approach to making projects. From woodturning a hollow cylinder of waste wood to a super spiral of spruce, this video will show you how to make a slinky from scrap wood using lasers and lathes. This wood was destined for the log burner and yet I found a better use to extend it's life. The shavings will go to recycling. That leaves offsetting the use of ...

    1. epoxy→(transparent/colored/anti-uv/polarized) film: bind to veneer with heat (and maybe pressure?), uniform thickness, no bubbles; can stack a lot of layers with different kinds of film as you wish and then bind again 2. shorter and narrower stripes when binding (easier to get precise), but thicker (or multilayered) the final patterned sheet: the light play with changing viewing angles is what makes it cool, right? 3. stretch veneer when binding 4. glueing 45°: cut layers before 45° and join same side parts from adjacent layers, so the same sheet adjacent parts are joined, making it match more precisely; sand the glued surfaces; use right degree clamp 5. use led light diffuser film, leaving 1/2in between leds and film

Possibly your best piece yet. Be guided by your disasters as they may direct you in new directions. That's my secret. Let the creation flow though you and be not a forced manipulation. I'm nothing without my mistakes.

This is a truly amazing work of art and craftmanship, Ray. I am a mid-level turner and like to try new ideas. I have a couple of questions about the video. At 3:06 of the video you state that each half is glued together in a stack of 3 (I thought this was done earlier in the video. Is there some other gluing going on?) Then you cut the stack of 3 at right angles on the table saw into individual pieces (you make these cuts all the same size. Then how do you get the layers of the plywood to line up between pieces when you glue them together? It seems that the width of the table saw blade would shift the pattern on each piece) I hope these questions are not too foolish, but I would appreciate your advice.

One idea would be to laser out the veneers as rings. That way there's be less internal lathing and less waste (although you'd have to have a plan to use all the middles).

Very clever jig! Nice work- I think it turned out great! I'm working with a 900x900mm bed but I don't have space to feed through since it has to sit in a corner- so it's kind of a trade off. Either way, it's just a 10 watt laser so until I'm up to a 20+ or a CO2 I probably won't utilize the whole area- still nice though. Prettiest place on Earth that I've seen in Person has to be the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. The view from Pike's Peak was just plain epic in all directions- I felt like I was drunk after driving up to the top, I think I was focusing on the road, then once I got out I can see for Hundreds of Miles in all directions- kinda messed with my head a bit!

Thank you for this video! I have been looking for it since I saw your first videos on the open helix corkscrew. This project has fascinated me. Now I see more detail in how you are doing it, and I am more determined to try to reproduce your work. I do have a different idea for the jig. I will provide video for my efforts - win or lose, and give credit to you either way. If I can reproduce it, I figure we both win. You have promoted your new cut, and independent research has proved it to be viable. I have seen many videos on segmented turning, and they fascinate me. But none have created the excitement that your project has for me. I hope that I can share positive results of my efforts, and congratulations to you for educating us all on how to do it. Thank you again.

Im sure its already been suggested, but I think creating a light, solid, "filler" piece inside, would not only hold it together better, but keep pieces from falling through, and keep burn-through from happening
